The collection encompasses the history of the West African empires of Mali, Songhay, Benin and Oyo and the Ashanti and Hausa states, plus the Central African Kingdoms of the Kongo, Luba and Chokwe. East African images include Great Zimbabwe, the ancient trading posts of the Swahili coast and the art and architecture of Axum, Lalibela and Gondar in Ethiopia. The North African collection covers Phoenician, Roman, Berber and Arabic architecture and the art and artefacts of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
